Martyrdom is not an infrequent psychological finding. People who feel they have been deprived of something wallow in misery and self-pity instead of seeing what it is they did or failed to do that resulted in the deprivation. This of course gets them nowhere because they do not take the necessary steps to get whatever it is they want. They are too occupied with feeling sorry for themselves.
